2025-09-26 Supporting families in the UK
Child poverty in the UK is a disgrace and we should be ashamed at the number of children who do not have enough to eat and do not have a decent home.
Its a fact for many reasons families with too little incomes or unable to work need benefits to supplement their cost of living and it is paramount that they should all be supported and respected.
There are various political motives and activities to reduce the cost of benefits in the UK and indeed help children who are in this situation. There is of course limited state funding for all things and we may not always agree how they balance the books between nuclear submarines, fast rail networks and starving children and its up to us to petition our MP's to do the right thing.
One topic that is being debated at the moment is scrapping the "two child benefit cap". This cap is penalizing struggling families with more than two children and more importantly penalizing those children I feel the cap was the wrong approach.
The main motive I hear for this cap is reducing the cost of benefits which is the popular story for those not on benefits.
I think this is not the real reason, I believe that this is a way of forcing parents on reduced incomes to not have more than two children but I think this is the wrong way to do it. To say to parents that if you have more children than two children we will make you suffer is morally wrong.
Of course there are too many people in the world and we should be looking at reducing the population especially as machines and AI replace jobs.
And of course if you have little income then having children will only make things more difficult but parents have the right to have a family as a fundamental human right.
Rather than punishing families we should be working much harder to help and educate them through the various support groups available that work more closely with the communities where child poverty is more common.
I would hope that the majority of parents will always want the best for their children and if they are shown that by acting responsibly they can ensure that there children will have a better future then I would hope the majority would see this as a way forward, of course there will be a few "cheats" but they should be the minority and they should be handled appropriately!
